Although multi-institutional retrospective study is a valuable research method to obtain real-world knowledge, control of bias through epidemiological principles is essential. The Kyoto Esophageal and Gastric Surgery Study Group have conducted multi-institutional retrospective studies led primarily by young surgeons in collaboration with clinical and research experts from the department of surgery and the school of public health. In this article, we will introduce the points of developing the study design and the joint research system and human resource development to enhance multi-institutional retrospective study in the field of surgery.
