Although the number of trauma surgeries has been decreasing, some patients with torso trauma still require life-saving surgery. Currently, it is difficult to train trauma surgeons using usual on-the-job training; thus, supplementary off-the-job training is considered important. Here, we provide a background to the Surgical Strategy and Treatment for Trauma (SSTT) course, a form of off-the-job training. This course includes not only skill training but also training in strategic decision-making and the development of teamwork. Additionally, the unique SSTT course is based on conditions specific to Japan. In this course, trainees gain an understanding of the principles of trauma surgery as well as of the four factors of “speed and suitability,” “strategy,” “tactics,” and “teamwork” using classroom lectures and practicing surgery on animals. The SSTT course not only provides surgical skill development but also trauma team education; therefore, it can be considered as form of trauma surgery education in Japan.
