EFFORTS TO INCREASE THE NUMBER OF CHEST SURGEONS
The number of members of the Japanese Association for Chest Surgery is 3,300 and growing. Chest surgery offers a stable work–life balance with relatively short operating hours and few emergency surgeries. There is a strong desire of chest surgeons for a better training program, an environment in which surgeons can concentrate on their primary duties, and an increase in income. The training program should include more off-the-job training and the use of the latest technology. In the working environment, task shifting of administrative work and improvement of work efficiency through digitization of the hospital are issues to be addressed. Young chest surgeons are highly interested in balancing clinical work and research, and therefore the current situation where it is difficult to secure time for research due to excessive clinical workloads should be overcome. Maintaining a balance between work, research, and private life is a challenge not only for chest surgeons but for surgeons as a whole.
