CLINICAL TRIALS OF OMITTING SURGERY

Department of Breast Oncology, Gunma Prefectural Cancer Center, Ota, Japan

Tomomi Fujisawa

The breast symbolizes femininity, and breast cancer is a major concern for women. Surgery is the primary treatment, but it can compromise the aesthetics of the breast. Recent advances in drug therapy have contributed to improved prognosis. Clinical trials are underway to investigate the possibility of omitting surgery, particularly in cases of noninvasive cancer or when drug therapy shows efficacy. Energy-based treatments are also gaining attention, with radiofrequency ablation therapy being included in insurance coverage, offering a promising alternative to breast-conserving surgery. The development of treatments that do not compromise aesthetics and the selection of appropriate therapies are crucial for advancing breast cancer treatment.
