EXTRACORPOREAL MEMBRANE OXYGENATION FOR ADVANCED HEART FAILURE

Department of Cardiovascular Surgery, Kyushu University Hospital, Fukuoka, Japan

Tomoki Ushijima, Akira Shiose

The number of patients with acute heart failure continues to increase. Despite remarkable progress in treatment, the prognosis for patients with acute heart failure remains poor. Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) is a first-line mechanical circulatory support for refractory cardiogenic shock and hypoperfused heart failure. For successful ECMO treatment, it is essential to understand fully the severity of the disease and its pathology as well as the characteristics of ECMO. Furthermore, because ECMO has recently played a pivotal role as a bridge-to-bridge therapy as well as a bridge to recovery, its importance has increased. We describe the features of ECMO and future prospects.
