SURGICAL TECHNIQUES OF CAROTID ENDARTERECTOMY

Department of Neurosurgery, Nagasaki University School of Medicine, Nagasaki, Japan

Izumi Nagata

Surgical techniques to avoid complications after carotid endarterectomy (CEA), including patch angioplasty, are described. Perioperative monitoring to detect cerebral ischemia, complete removal of the atherosclerotic plaque, and secure closure of the arteriotomy are key points during the procedure. CEA under an operative microscope is recommended to achieve good surgical results.
