SURGERY IN THE AGE OF THE INDIVIDUAL

CEO, Kochi Health Sciences Center, Kochi, Japan

Motoichi Setoyama

Surgical medicine has developed with contribution from the basic medical sciences. At the same time, the life sciences have developed rapidly and are being applied clinically. Thus, the 20th century was the “age of science", and the age when science was valued the most. What is necessary in the 21st century? The further development of sugery is anticipated. ln addition, since it is believed that the 21st century will be the “age of the individual", I think that surgical medicine should address human indivisuality. In the 21st century, the Japan Surgical Society should promote surgical medicine by adhering to the dictum of Ambroise Pare : “to cure sometimes, to relieve often, to comfort always."
