The Japan Surgical Society (JSS) was founded with the intention of promoting scientific communication among surgeons. Quite deplorably, in recent years, a number of problems have occurred in relation to medical institutions, such as medical accidents, issues of expenses, and insufficient education and experience of medical practitioners. I believe the it is time for the JSS to speak out as a representative of the surgical community and take the lead in calling for improvements. To fulfill our obligations, we must first organize various discussion boards and collect as many opinions as possible from JSS members nationwide, and then set directions for how we can resolve outstanding issues in the most desirable and efficient manner and how we can organize ourselves for the betterment of our patients and society. Based on a consensus, we should act resolutely.
In terms of clinical and experimental research, originality should be respected to motivate our young researchers. The JSS Meeting scheduled for the spring of 2001 will serve this purpose, as we expect numerous international visitors to join us and offer opinions and evaluations from an international perspective.
