CRYPTORCHIDISM : INVESTIGATION OF TESTICULAR MALDESCENT USING CRYPTORCHID RAT MODELS

Department of Pediatric Surgery, Kyushu University, Fukuoka, Japan

Takeshi Shono, Sachiyo Suita

Testicular descent occurrs in two phases. In the first phase the testis is anchored to the inguinal region by the swollen gubernaculum, then in the second phase the testis is guided from the inguinal region to the scrotum by gubernacular migration. Cryptorchidism is caused by any anomaly that disrupts normal testicular descent. Not only hormonal anomalies, but also anatomical abnormalities induce undescended testes in various sites in rats.
