HEART TRANSPLANTATION

First Department of Surgery, Osaka University Medical School, Suita, Japan

Norihide Fukushima

Heart transplantation was introduced clinically in 1964 by Hardy using a Chimpanzee heart. Since the standard method had been established by Shumway and cyclosporine had been introduced in 1982, patient numbers increased rapidly. Because of donor shortage, patient numbers have been about 3,000 to 3,500 in these 8 years. According to the registry of the International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation, 1 and 3 year survival rate were 80% and 73%, respectively. We hope to start heart transplantation as soon as possible in Japan.
