A new immunosuppressive agent, cyclosporin, came into general use approximately ten years ago. This agent has revolutionized the results of transplantation of the heart, liver and kidney. Cadaveric liver transplantation will be performed in the very near future, although not yet successfully performed in Japan.
How are liver allografts obtained? How are organs allocated for all patient awaiting transplant? ln order to solve these issues, we established the Nishinippon Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network System in 1988. This presentation introduces the merits and problems of our system.
