NEW ERA;HEART TRANSPLANTATION IN JAPAN-PROBLEM AND SOLUTION

The attitude towards organ donation in Japan was assessed by a comprehensive questionnaire at the out-patient clinic of our hospital. A consensus on brain death was obtained in 81.2%. Majority of patients (90%) approved the initiation of heart transplanttion in Japan. However, Japanese legal factor seemed to have some barriers to obtain donor graft from brain death patient.
Three Japanese patients underwent heart transplant in US and UK. One patient died and two patients are alive. Seven patients were dead while they were waiting for heart transplant. In conclusion, the agreement of initiating heart transplant has been gradually understood in Japan.
