The results of 90 patients treated with combination modality treatment with radiotherapy for pancreatic cancer were evaluated. In patients having radiotherapy combined with curative surgery had a slightly longer survival time than those having surgery alone. In patients who had non-curative resection, the survival was significantly longer for the irradiated group than for the control group. In patients with unresectable cancer (Ho, Po), radiotherapy prolonged the survival time significantly. Pain decreased or disappeared in 90% of the patients and shrinkage of the tumor was found in 75% of the patients.
Thus, combination modality treatment using radiotherapy is considered to attain better results in patients with advanced cancer of the pancreas.
