We studied the effect of postoperative long-term cancer chemotherapy (PLCC) on 15-year survival rate of gastric cancer patients following curative resection.
The study consisted of 255 patients during 1965 to 1983 ; 118 patients wihout chemotheapy and 137 patients receiving PLCC. In all cases, 15-year survival rate of PLCC group (56.9%) was significantly higher than that of no chemotherapy group (45.7%) (p<0.05). In cases of n(-) or ps(-), the PLCC prolonged the 15-year survival rates (p<0. 05), while in cases of n(+) and/or ps(+), differences were not noted between the groups.
Our findings show that PLCC improves 15-year survival for patients with advanced gastric cancer following curative resection. Aggressive chemotherapy should be done for patients of n(+) and/or ps(+).
