GENERAL RULES FOR DESCRIBING CANCER OF THE PANCREAS IN JAPAN AND UICC TNM CLASSIFICATION

In 1980, Japan Pancreas Society published a brochure entitled with General Rules for Describing Cancer of the Pancreas. At the same time when the revised edition of the General Rules was published in 1982, TNM Committee of the UICC invited me to participate in the Study Group on Classification of Malignant Tumors of the Pancreas which had the aim of making TNM classification on carcinoma of the pancreas. We spent two days in 1982 and another two days in 1983. After long fervent discussions, we finally were able to make a draft. During the discussions, our data, which had been obtained from 10 institutions in Japan and analyzed in order to revise the General Rules, served as a good reference. The proposal was approved by TNM Committee and appeared in the Livre de Poche in 1987.
It is hoped that TNM Classification should be used whenever papers are reported in an international meeting or a journal.
