The staging system in the General Rules of Primary Liver Cancer (2nd version) by Liver Cancer Study Group of Japan (LCSGJ) was submitted to the TNM committee of UICC as a proposal for TNM calassification of liver cancer and adopted in the 4th edition of TNM CIassification of Malignant Tumours. So the staging system of LCSGJ and TNM are identical. There is a definition of curative and non-curative hepatectomy in the General Rules of LCSGJ. In some items defining the curability, TW factor, which means the shortest distance between the surgical stump of the operative specimen and the tumor, is included. For curative operation, TW is defined as being 1cm or more. According to this definition, the survival rates of relative curative and relative non-curative resection are almost the same. If the item of TW is excluded, the survival rates of these two resections are reasonable and acceptable.
