Japanese Research Society for Gastric Cancer was established in 1962, and its manual, “The General Rule for the Gastric Cancer Study” was published in 1963. The manual was translated and published in four foreign languages ; in English (1981), in Spanish (1981), in German (1985), and in Chinese. and they were internationally in use by numerous foreign specialists of gastric cancer. Data of approximately 200,000 patients had been collected using the manual in Japan, and the data-base played an important role in making the TNM CIassification and the WHO manual for gastric cancer study. The manual also contributed in various multi-center trials on gastric cancer in many countries;in China (1981), in Germany (1982), in UK (1984) and in the Netherlands (1989). In order to adapt the internationally standardized rule, the Japanese manual has to be improved in Stage-grouping, definition of distant metastasis, and etc.. It would be recommendable to establish “lnternational advisory committee” by foreign specialists in Japanese Research Society for Gastric Cancer for further improvement of the manual.
