The “General Rules for Clinical and Pathological Recording of Breast Cancer (GRBC)” edited by the Japanese Breast Cancer Society have been published as 10 editions in Japanese and 2 editions in English. Main skeleton of the GRBC was planned at the time of the first introduction of TNM Classification of UICC into this country. Thus, the clinical trial of TNM classification of breast cancer in Japan was started in 1962, and continued up to 1975. This so-called UICC-TNM trial was conducted 13 years long, whose detailed data was published twice in English version (Jpn. J. Clin. Oncology, 1974 and 1982).
The second important point related to the GRBC is histological classification of breast cancer. The WHO's classification was revised newly in 1982, so the GRBC classification was also revised mostly in 1985, for adjustment to the new WHO's classification. The second English edition of the GRBC including this part was published in the journal “Jpn. J. Surg.” in 1989.
In addition, the description of definitions of “early breast cancer” and of “recqrrence of breast cancer” were also included in the GRBC (English), whereas the description on the recently developed operative procedure “partial mastectomy” was adopted in the GRBC (Japanese).
