In order to prevent local recurrence of rectal cancer postoperatively, we attempted to use preoperative irradition, 5-fluororacil (5-FU) or both. Recently, we treated rectal cancer patients using irradiation, hyperthermia and 5-FU suppository. Hyperthermia was carried out using endotract electrode equipped with radiofrequency system. The preoperative combined therapy of irradiation, hyperthermia and 5-FU suppository produced excellent tumor response in comparison to other treatment groups. Cancer invasion to the external wall of the rectum was remarkably reduced by irradiation, hyperthermia and 5-FU suppository. No postoperative death cases and no local recurrence cases were observed in irradiation, hyperthermia and 5-FU suppository combined group. Furthermore, combined therepy of hyperthermia and infusion of cisplatinum and 5-FU was effective for local recurrence of rectal cancer. In conclusion, the preoperative combined therapy is expected to reduce local recurrence of rectal cancer.
