THE PROGRESS AND PROSPECT OF SURGERY FOR GASTRIC CANCER

Cancer Institute Hospital, Tokyo, Japan

Mitsumasa Nishi

Gastric surgery began in 1881 in Europe when Billroth succeeded in the resection of the stomach. In Japan, the first successful gastrectomy was performed by Kondo in 1897.
After the termination of World War II, the surgical procedures for gastric cancer have progressed remarkably, especially in Japan, owing to the advancement of diagnostic imazing, increased detection rate of early gastric cancer by the wide-spread mass-screening, the selection of appropriate resection margins, the dissection of lymph nodes, and the improved techniques of reconstruction. At the present time, the following surgical modalities for the treatment of gastric cancer are of great importance : Endoscopic therapy, reduced surgery, extensive surgery, and more effective combination therapies.
