The Second Department of Surgery, Hokkaido University School of Medicine, Sapporo, Japan

Tatsuzo Tanabe

Since the tremendous developments in the field of vascular surgery have been made, new surgical approaches with application of vascular surgical techniques are now broadened throughout a wide range of frame works of general surgery.
From the analyses of the experiences with vascular surgery the author initially described the excellent operative results of various vascular diseases, such as the thoracic and abdominal aortic aneurysms, dissecting aorta aneurysm, arteriosclerotic occlusion of the peripheral artery and venous occlusive diseases. From these experiences relatively extensive applications of vascular surgical techniques have been performed, such as modified distal spleno-renal shunt for portal hypertension, surgical management of various visceral aneurysms and extensive resection of advanced intrathoracic and intraabdominal cancers.
Efficacy of the strategy for broad application of vascular surgical techniques can be achieved with sufficient knowledges and skills of the present vascular surgery.
