Some patients with chronic constipation show megarectum in barium enema examination. A few patients whose constipation with megarectum were not cured with laxatives and/or suppository within 2 or 3 months were operated in our hospital. The opferative procedure for chronic constipation is named sphinctero-myectomy and -plasty (SMP).
Since 1978, 10 patients were operated by SMP method. Seven out of 10 are found to have good results by questionnaire examihation. However other 3 patients have poor results. The patients with good results had higher anal pressure than those with poor results before operation.
Our results indicate that this operation is suitable for the patient with high anal pressure before operation.
