Up to now there has been no more effective way to cure primary hyperparathyroidism than to surgically extirpate the diseased parathyroid gland. Pathologically, the histological types can be classified into adenoma, hyperplasia or carcinoma, however, it is difficult to diagnose these prior to surgery. The major factors to establish the diagnosis before operation in the surgery of primary hyperparathyroidism are the the localization of the diseased parathyroid gland and the pathological types. Based on previous experiences, the authors investigated these two factors involving primary hyperparathyroidism and discussed the selection of operative method.
