The ventricular assist device was developed and has become available in clinical use in August 1982. From August 1982 to April 1986, ten patients with post MI complications were surgically treated. Seven of these could be weaned off from CPB without LVAD use, while three patients with profound heartfailure required LVAD use for CPB weaning. Two patients of LVAD use were weaned off from the LVAD successfully and one of them was discharged on the 44th postoperative day. There were two deaths caused by MOF postoperatively. Eight patients including the LVAD case could discharge and return to normal life in NYHA 1 or 2 class.
It is concluded that LVAD maintained the patient's circulation and restored the profound heart failure and the other organ dysfunction following CPB weaning.
