Juntendo University, School of Medicine, Tokyo, Japan

Keijiro Suruga

More than 500 neonatal surgical cases have been treated in seven major pediatric surgical centers and the operative results of neonatal surgical lesions have remarkably improved during the last five years in Japan. Particularly, the operative mortality of esophageal atresia dropped from 42% (1978) to 27.9% (1983) and the operative mortality of intestinal atresia dropped from 20.9% (1978) to 11.0% (1983), according to the statistical studies obtained from the Japanese Society of Pediatric Surgeons and the results of recent survey (1985) on neonatal surgical cases experienced in major pediatric surgical centers in Japan.
However, the operative mortalities of omphalocele, posterolateral hernia and perforation of alimentary tract of newborn babies are still high, showing about 30% operative mortality.
