CLINICAL STUDIES ON POSTOPERATIVE RESULTS AND COMPLICATIONS OF STOMACH CARCINOMA IN THE AGED PATIENTS
Postoperative results of stomach carcinoma in the aged patients, including operative mortality, survival 5 years and complications were studied on 127 patients who were over 70 year and hospitalized in our hospital during the 11 years from 1970 to 1980.
Conclusions were as follows:
1) Among these 127 cases, operative death occurred in 4 cases (3.6%) and curative resectablity was in 49 cases (38.6%).
2) Postoperative complications occurred in 21.4% in this series, especially the highest one was closely correlated with the respiratory system. The cases with more than 3 hours operative time showed the higher incidence of complication after operation (31.4%).
3) Stage of stomach cancer in the aged patients was more advanced than that of under 70 year patients.
4) Five year survival rate of all patients with over Stage II of cancer who underwent curative gastrectomy was worse than that of under 70 year patients.
5) In order to improve the results of stomach carcinoma in the aged, it is most important to evaluate the function of each organ sufficiently before and after surgery.
