The results of surgical treatment for gastric cancer in patients over the age of 70 (Group A) were compared with those in patients younger than 69 (Group B). The patients in Group A were 270 (9.6%) of the 2823 patients who had undergone a laparotomy for gastric cancer during the 15 years from 1965 to 1979. The patients in group A have increased in recent years. The ratio of male to female in group A was 3.5 :1 ; in Group B, 1.9 :1.
The rate of gastrectomy was lower in group A than in group B. The patients with lymph node metastasis were found in 55.3% of group A and in 45.0% of group B. Incidence of type II by Borrmann's classification was 32.7% of group A and 18.3% of group B. Histologically, 64.1% of group A and 42.1% of group B were diagnosed as well-differentiated adenocarcinoma. Twelve (4.4%) of patients in group A and 51 (2.0%) in group B died within 30 days after laparotomy.
The 5-year survival rate reached 76.3% in group A and 73.7% in group B,as computed by actuarial method with correction for age and sex. The results of surgical treatment in aged were favorable.
