In 64 patients who underwent radical surgery for rectal cancer, post operative ano-rectal and urinary functions were assessed on a clinical basis and by manometric study.
Post operative patients who underwent low anterior resection suffered from ano-rectal dysfunction within 3 months but by the 12th post operative months, most of patients recovered satisfactory anorectal function.
Manometric studies showed that dysfunction of the internal anal sphincter will be due to the degree of damage to the pelvic plexus during operation.
Patients who underwent low anterior resection or abdomino-perineal resection suffered from urinary dysfunction in the early stage after operation.
Manometric studies (Cystometry, Urethral Pressure profile) also showed dysfunction of the bladder and the urethra which may be due to damage to the pelvic plexus and the pudendal nerve as well.
For the first step to prevent these dysfunction following radical surgery without any loss of radicality, it is most important to compare each postoperative dysfunction with analysis of each finding of manometric study.
The development of technique to prevent each function as far as possible during radical surgery may be expected.
