The prognosis of lung cancer patients who underwent combined resection of adjacent tissue and the lung was examined.
In lung resections with chest wall, pericardial, and diaphragmatic resections, where radiation was added pre-or post-operatively, the prognosis of patients with squamous cell carcinoma was favorable. On the other hand, there were few long-term survivors among adenocarcinoma and undifferentiated carcinoma patients. Further studies are necessary to improve the prognosis of such patients.
In addition, possibilities of extending operative indications for lung cancer, such as combined resection of oesophagus or vertebrae with the lung, were discussed.
