From the standpoint of preoperative assessment of esophageal carcinoma, results of treatment were evaluated using 4-year cummulative survival rate.
Preoperative irradiation has been used as the main method in combination with esophagectomy. Relating to preoperative assessment of main esophageal lesion, effects of preoperative irradiation on the results of treatment for esophageal carcinoma was analyzed retrospectively.
For thoracic esophageal lesions as a whole, it did not appear that preoperative irradiation added much to the results of treatment. Preoperative irradiation, however, tended to increase the survival rate for locally advanced upper and middle thirds lesions in the thoracic esophagus, but not for the lesions in lower third.
During last 3 years nearly 10% of the patients with resectable esophageal lesions were those with early lesion in our institute. Since the cure rate for early esophageal lesion exceeds 75%, it would be reasonable to foresee significant improvement in the results of treatment for esophageal carcinoma as a whole.
