PRESIDENTIAL ADDRESS “ADVANCE IN TREATMENT FOR ESOPHAGEAL CANCER”

Hiroshi Sato

I express my hearty gratitude to Professors Sadanobu Seo and Komei Nakayama and all members of Japan Surgical Society for me to have an opportunity of presidential address at the 82nd Annual Meeting of the Society. My department of Surgery has a fifty year research history of treatment for esophageal cancer as a main thema. The door of treatment for esophageal cancer was first opened by Professor Seo in Japan and the world-wide monumental work was accomplished by Professor Nakayama. Taking over two biggest pioneers, we have operated 2,000 cases of esophageal cancer in my department and the number of 10 year survivor reached 100 cases. However, I am not completely satisfied with the results. Therefore we have been making continuous efforts in the field of both diagnosis and treatment of the disease, and will continue our efforts to control the disease.
