STUDIES ON THE OXIDATION OF FAT EMULSIONS IN RATS
The oxidation of fat emulsions was studied under various conditions in rats by recovering the expired
14CO
2 after i.v. administration by single injection of 10% soybean oil emulsions labelled with
14C-1-tripalmitin. The following results were obtained.
1) The peak of the curve of oxidation occurred always about 70 min. after injection of this emulsions irrespective of the dose of fat over 0.025mg/100g weight. On the other hand, when the dose of fat was below 0.0125 mg/100 g weight, the less the dose was administered, the more did it hasten the peak of the oxidation. However, the mean total oxidation in 5 hr. was always 46-47% of injected dose on 24 hr. fasted condition irrespective of the dose administered.
2) There was no relation between the elimination of fat emulsions from the blood stream and their oxidation.
3) The oxidation of exogenous fat reached the maximum when the same amount of glucose as fat was administered simultaneously. The dose of larger amount of glucose in relation to fat resulted in decreasing the oxidation of fat.
4) Simultaneous administration of fat emulsions did not cause any significant effect on the oxidation of both glucose and amino acids.
5) Surgical stress resulted in decreasing the elimination rate of fat emulsions from the blood stream but did not influence their oxidation.
