THE EFFECT OF VARIOUS KINDS OF VAGOTOMIES ON ANTRAL G- AND D-CELL POPULATION IN DOGS

The effect of three types of vagotomy on antral gastrin and somatostatin cell (G- and D-cell) populations in the dog was investigated by the specific immunoperoxidase staining technique. G-cell count was significantly increased at three months after any kind of vagotomy, but was rather decreased at one year after the selective or truncal vagotomy. The number of D-cells was much lower than that of G-cells at any time before or after surgery, and the number of D-cells increased significantly one year after all three types of vagotomies. There was a significant correlation between the number of G-cells and that of D-cells preoperatively, but the correlation disappeared at three months after the three types of vagotomies. At one year after surgery, these correlations were restored.
