We employed acrylic resin in closing the defects left after wide resection of the anterior chest wall in 8 patients―5 with recurrem breast cancer, 1 with cystosarcoma phyqqodes, 1 with liposarcoma of the anterior chest wall, and 1 with metastatic carcinoma of the sternum.
Neither paradoxical movement of the chest wall nor fragmentation of the prostheses occurred postoperatively in any of 8 patients. No disturbances of respiration or of chest wall movement were experienced, although this material does not possess elasticity. But 2 patients had local infection, 3 patients had local retention of serous discharge and 5 patients complained of slight anterior chest pain. These postoperative complications suggested the foreign body reaction of acrylic resin. However these conditions were easily controlled by usual medication.
Acrylic resin thus proved to be satisfactory for maintaining stability of the chest wall and protecting important organs in the anterior mediastinum. As for the reconstruction of the anterior chest wall, especially the sterum and chest wall adjacent to it, replacement with acrylic resin was extremely useful due to its desirable rigidity and easy manipulation in operation.
