CYTOLOGICAL AND HISTOLOGICAL EXAMINATION DURING SURGICAL OPERATION FOR GASTRIC CARCINOMA
Peritoneal lavage cytology during surgery was done in 171 patients with primary gastric carcinoma. Fortythree out of 45 patients with positive peritoneal cytology died of peritonitis carcinomatosa 4 months to 4 years after operation.
Brushing cytodiagnosis of gastric mucosa at the oral side of primary cancerous lesion during surgery was performed in 893 patients, and frozen section examination at the edge of gastric stumps was carried out in 1350 patients with gastric carcinoma. Twenty-eight and 23 patients, respectively, were positive in each of the both examinations at the macroscopically non-malignant area. These positive patients underwent radical operation according to the results of these examinations.
Based on carcinoma extension exactly evaluated by the cytological and histological examination during surgery, the most adequate treatments should be performed for every cancer patient.
