Plasma β-thromboglobulin (β-TG) and platelet factor 4 (PF4) were measured in patients with various thrombogenic diseases and their changes were investigated in patients who underwent laparotomy.
The following results were obtained.
1) Plasma β-TG level was elevated in various thrombogenic diseases, while PF4 only in malignant disease.
2) The positive correlation was found between β-TG and PF4
3) Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) was found postoperatively in 17 of 105 cases by a continous measurement of β-TG.
4) Diagnosis of DVT is made where β-TG elevates over 50ng/ml or postoperative daily change is over 30ng/ml, DVT is highly suspected where it rises over 60ng/ml though daily change is not so significant.
5) Measurement of β-TG is the most reliable test for screening of DVT.
6) Measurement of PF4 is not effective for diagnosis of DVT because of its less significant changes.
7) Significant decrease of antithrombin III was found in fifth and seventh postoperative day in patients who developed DVT.
8) Changes in β-TG and PF4 after injection of heparin is not parallel.
