ANGIOGRAPHIC STUDY ON CARCINOMA OF VATER'S PAPILLA
Angiographic study was performed in 34 cases of carcinoma of Vater's papilla to evaluate its clinical usefulness. Angiographic findings of carcinoma of Vater's papilla mainly consisted of tortuosity, arterial encasement, hypervascularity and tumor stain. Those findings could be detected in the lesion larger than 2 cm in diameter. There were close correlations between histological findings such as papillary adenocarcinoma, tubular adenocarcinoma and angiographic findings such as hypervascularity, arterial encasement respectively. Arterial encasement or hypervascularity became more apparent in larger tumor, supposed to be infiltrating into the deeper tissue. Microangiographic study was performed on the specimen removed by the surgery for more detail observation of vascular structure of the tumor. Vessels were quite rich in the tumor and showed marked arterial encasement. A great number of neoplastic vessels, 100 to 200 μ in diameter, was recognized histologically. It seems that angiographic examination of carcinoma of Vater's papilla is a quite useful mean for estimation of size, extent and resectability of the tumor.
