Two hundred and twelve cases of PDA were operated in our hospital. Before 1968, 95 cases which were consisted of 48.4% of ligation and 51.6% of division of the ductus had 4.2% of operative and 1.1% of late mortalities, but after 1969, the mortalities were decreased to 0.8% operative and 0.9% late out of 117 cases which were consisted of 19.6% of ligation and 80.4% of division of the ductus. The causes of operative death were three hemorrhages and three respiratory failures and those of late death were one sepsis and one IRDS of the immature infant.
The points of the techniques of division of the ductus which have been employed in our hospital are consisted of posterolateral incisions, extrapleural dissections of the ductus, tape encirclings on the descending aorta above and bellow the ductus, tieing the fingerholes of the ductus clamps, suturing of the aortic side end of the ductus first and simple suture ligatures of the pulmonary artery side end of the ductus with a mattress suture of 00 silk.
