SURGERY OF PATENT DUCTUS ARTERIOSUS

Department of Surgery School of Medicine, Keio University

Shigeyuki Takeuchi,  et al.

Closure of patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) has been performed on 348 patients at Keio University Hospital. There were 4 deaths (mortality rate: 1.6%) in the group of 247 patients with uncomplicated PDA and 26 deaths (25.7%) in the group of 101 patients associated with intracardiac anomalies.
Division of the ductus through left thoracotomy is preferable in the patients with isolated PDA. Multiple ligation of the ductus, however, is very general in small infants. Intrapericardial ligation through mediansternotomy is indicated for the patients associated with intracardiac anomalies.
