PARENTERAL NUTRITIONAL SUPPORT IN PEDIATRIC SURGICAL PATIENTS WITH MALIGANT TUMOUR
The common denominator that prevents the completion of anitineoplastic treatment in patients with malignant tumour seems to suboptinal nutritional status. If these patients are nutritionally replaced, they will tolerate chemotherapy and radiotherapy following surgery better and will have less surgical mortality.
During the past 5 years period at the Department of Pediatric Surgery, Kyushu University Hospital, 29 children with malignant solid tumour have recieved intravenous hyperalimentation (IVH)
for periods greater than one week as nutritional supports during antineoplastic treatment. During IVH, general nutrition and appearance improved in all patients and the uninterrupted administration of antineoplastic therapy could be completed. IVH, therefore, appears to be an effective means of combating the malnutrition which may occur with malignant tumour and its therapy.
