CHEMOTHERAPY FOR ADVANCED CANCER OF THE PANCREAS AND THE BREAST BY UTILIZING INTRAVENOUS TOTAL PARENTERAL NUTRITION
Total parenteral nutrition has been used as an adjunt to chemotherapy for advanced cancer in more than two hundred cases during the part two years. Among the various cancers, cancer of the pancreas and the breast responded prominentely to the therapy.
In cancer of the pancreas, a multimodal treatment was tried in combination of intraoperative radiotherapy and the subsequent administration of 5FU or FT207 plus a larger closis of adriamycin by utilizing total parenteral nutrition. All of thus treated cases were for advanced compared with resectable ones but the survival time of the former is never inferior to the latter.
The breast cancer with catastrophic metastasis which showed no more significant improvement by previous chemotherapy and hormone therapy was chosen for the present schedule. In addition to the daily cyclophosphomide, one hundred mg of adriamycin was administered three or four times with four weeks interval by utilizing total parenteral nutrition (TPN). In twentytwo cases, complete and partial remission (UICC) were obtained in two and thirteen cases respectively.
Cellular immunity tested by skin reaction such as PPP, PHA, DNCB and serum α-globulin demonstrated a significant relation to the serum albumin level and general nutritional status in patients with advanced cancer.
