During past 7 years (from July, 1972 through June, 1979), we had treated 145 patients with carcinoma of the thoracic esophagus. Of these 145, 132 cases underwent resection of the carcinoma (resectability 91%) and the operative mortality rate was 6.1%.
The majority of the patients who underwent operations were in the advanced stage with infiltration of the carcinoma into the adventitia as well as lymph nodes metastases.
Details of the results of the treatments based on the stage of the disease was presented in this commumcatlon.
The most of long term survivers were obtained from the group of patients in whom no lymph node metastasis was noted.
The postoperative irradiation to the cervical and upper mediastinal portion seemed to be effective in terms of prolongation of the life-span.
Our current policy for the surgical treatment of the esophageal cancer is to eliminate dysphaia and to lead the patients to normal life.
