Ninety five patients with anorectal malformations were experienced during the past 19 years from 1961 to 1979 in the First Department of Surgery, Kyoto Prefectural University of Medicine. Sixty eight, aged 3―19, were personally interviewed and 39 of these 68 had manometric and radiologic studies to evaluate postoperative continence. The manometric study was also performed on 45 normal children, aged 2―6, as a control group.
The clinical assessment of patients with good results who had adequate continence was extremely high (96%) in the low type lesions compared to 18% in the high type anomalies.
The presence of an anorectal angulation in the barium enema study was found to correlate well with continence subsequent to surgery for imperforate anus. Manometric study have shown that good clinical results were also correlated well with a marked anorectal pressure difference.
