Clinical, angiographic and echocardiographic studies in 16 cases of group I TGA (TGA I) and 13 cases of group II TGA (TGA II), who survived over than two years after Mustard operation, were carried out.
Out of 29 patients, there was only one late death who died six years after surgery because of right ventricular failure due to progressive tricuspid regurgitation.
Angiographic study revealed that the decreased right ventricular ejection fractions (RVEF), which were 0.45 and 0.37 in TGA I and TGA II, respectively, were compensated with an increase of right ventricular end-diastolic volume.
Two dimensional and M mode echocardiography was carried out to demonstrate the increase of right ventricular pre-ejection time/ejection time ratio (RVPEP/ET) to the average value of 0.45, which is higher than normal left ventricular value of 0.35.
