EVALUATION OF COMBINATION THERAPY OF SURGERY AND ANTINEOPLASTIC AGENTS FOR MALIGNANT TUMOR IN CHILDHOOD

Department of Pediatric Surgery, University of Tokyo School of Medicine

Sumio Saito

During the past two decades, periodic assessments of the clinical capabilities for the control of childhood solide tumors, such as neuroblastoma, nephroblastoma, and malignant embryonal carcinoma have been undertaken. Studies were made of the growth, survival rate, and late complication in 34 patients who survived at childhood cancer. Based upon the results of the recent treatment, it is now possible to evaluate the recent advances in the combination therapy for childhood malignancy.
More favorable results will be obtained by multimodalities of treatment and new knowledge during a next decade. However, successfully treated patients may be at risk of another malignancy later in life due to multimodal therapy of radiation and chemotherapy.
