From 1968 to 1974, subtotal thyroidectomy for Graves' disease was performed upon 171 patients, aged between eight and 15 years, at Ito Hospital. The five to 12 years follow-up was made in 152 patients. There was no thyroid storm nor surgical death, but 2 cases of permanent hypocalcemia was noted.
Eleven patients (7.2 per cent) had recurrent hyperthyroidism and were treated by medication. Ten patients (6.5 per cent) were hypothyroid and have been treated with thyroid hormone. Euthyroidal state was noted in 131 patients (86.2 per cent).
Serum level of TSH was determined in 86 patients who were supposed to be euthyroid from serum T3, T4 and T3U. In 54 cases of them, serum TSH values were abnormally high, indicating subclinical hypothyroidism.
Histopathologically, lymphocytic infiltration and lymphoid follicle formation were noted in resected specimen, in most of hypothyroid cases.
In our experimence, surgical treatment of Graves' disease in children gave as good results as in adults. It was suggested that surgical procedure would be the choice for the treatment of Graves' disease which is not controlled by medication.
