LATE RESULTS AFTER THYROIDECTOMY FOR GRAVES' DISEASE

Surgical Department, Noguchi Thyroid Clinic, Beppu, Japan

Nobuo Murakami

Postoperative thyroid functions of 2039 patients of Graves' disease from 1957 to 1973 were evaluated clinically and biochemically. About 81% of the patients were euthyroid clinically, while 71 % were euthyroid biochemically.
In our operation, the size of the remnant is determined according to the size of the thyroid gland, and the relation between the estimated remnant size (yg) and thyroid mass (xg) was as follows, y=0.9√x+3.4.
In these patients postoperative thyroid function was not related to the remnant size.
The incidence of postoperative hypothyroidism did not increase progressively in the late postoperative period.
The operative complications were negligible except for hypoparathyroidism which occurred in 0.58% of patients operated during 1978.
