CARDIOGENIC SHOCK IN SURGERY
The incidence of cardiogenic shock following operations during past ten years (1969-1978) in our clinic was studied, and the result in early five years period was compared with it in late five years period.
The onset rate of cardiogenic shock was not decreased in the late periods (early, 12.0% (114/949), late, 12.4% (128/1029) in Thoracic Surgery: early, 0.2% (5/2219), late 0.4% (7/1789) in General surgery).
The mortality following cardiogenic shock appeared to be decreased in the late period (early, 46.5%, late, 35.2% in Thoracic Surgery: early, 80.0%, late 57.1 % in General Surgery), but no statistical differences were not found. Death caused by complications following cardiogenic shock was relatively increased in the late period.
In Thoracic Surgery, the most patients with cardiogenic shock consisted of the patients with low cardiac output syndrome after open cardiac surgery (LOS).
The incidence of LOS was not decreased in the late period, however, death caused by LOS was decreased.
