IMMUNOLOGICAL REGRESSION OF METASTATIC TUMOR CELLS AFTER SURGICAL EXCISION OF PRIMARY TUMOR

2nd Department of Surgery, Hokkaido University School of Medicine

Hiroyuki Katoh

Metastases of high antigenic tumor in lymph nodes and lungs regressed spontaneously by surgical excision of primary tumor. The regression of metastases were most frequently observed when surgical excision was performed at the middle stage of the growth of primary tumor. The reason of the regression might be due to the host immunological responses against tumor. It is because cell mediated and humoral immunity against the tumor were most evident at the middle stage of the tumor growth.
On the other hand spontaneous regression of metastases of low antigenic tumor after surgical excision was not observed at any stage of tumor growth.
Therefore the antigenicity of tumor cells and timing of surgery are the very important points to the regression of metastasis after the excision of primary tumor.
