THE SERUM LEVEL OF IMMUNOSUPPRESSIVE ACIDIC PROTEIN (IAP) IN PATIENTS WITH CANCER BEFORE AND AFTER OPERATION

A new acidic protein was detected in the serum with cancer patients by using ampholine thinlayer isoelectrofocusing method adjusting the pH between 2.5 and 6.0. After purification the protein was found to have molecular weight of 59,000 and isoelectric point of 3.0±0.05. Both in vitro and in vivo immunosuppressive activity was accompanied with this acidic protein. Thus, this acidic protein may play an important role on immunosuppressive induction in cancer patients.
IAP level was assayed by means of SRID (single radial immunodiffusion) with serum specimens serially obtained from patients with various types of carcinoma before and after surgical operation. High levels of IAP were found in these cancer patients, (over 500 μg/ml) in comparison with the mean level in healthy subjects (325 μg/ml). The IAP level gradually returned to normal levels after resection of the carcinoma. The patient usually had a poor prognosis with an increasing tendency of the IAP level, in contrast, the longer survival was observed in patients with the reduction of high IAP level.
